DEMIS FAQs

What is DEMIS?

DEMIS, which stands for Departmental Executive Management Information System, is a planning and management information system for academic units which is based on the Internet.

It uses the World Wide Web (WWW) to deliver to the user analytical information that often is requested from the Office of Institutional Research and Planning. By providing it to academic decision-makers via the WWW, we are trying to make it convenient to use, easy to print only those pages you want, and provide the options to import data into your local software.

What type of data is available?

Current plans are to provide information which has been summarized or aggregated at department and program levels. It will often be the type of data which a department could look up about an individual student or instructor, but not have readily available in a summation or average format.

The one exception is teaching load data, which does list the entire work load of individual instructors. The teaching load data have been frequently requested from many schools and departments, which is why it was placed into the system.

Why is DEMIS password protected?

At the time we were developing the initial system, concern was raised about possible public access of the data. Someone from outside the university may not know that a particular department:

  • 'downsized' over a period of years
  • implemented more stringent application requirements
  • underwent a reorganization

Therefore, we placed a restricted access to the data, which requires a user name and password.

How do I get a password?

To get a user name and password, please have your Dean or the Director of your area request one for you.
